THE KULT RECORDS CASE - I have mentioned earlier about the Dutch record company BlackRhythm, and that they sold music not made by Kurtis but with his name on it. Apart from the remixes these tracks actually were made by Kurtis, he made them around 1995 on the Kult Records label. There is a complicated dispute with kult Records & Kurtis Mantronik, kult wanted kurtis to give them their advance back after they sold a record (wonderland), because the track did poorly in the market. of course kurtis refused, because he had an agreement that the tracks were not suppose to be marketed as a Mantronik record. So BlackRhythm bought the tracks from Kult Records but they changed the names of the tracks and made remixes of the tracks which Kurtis didn't like too much. The tracks were made 4 years ago and do NOT represent the sound of Kurtis Mantronik now. This is a very complicated case and i won't take any side, and i apologize to BlackRhythm for jumping to conclusion. Whether you buy the records or not is up to you, but in my opinion these tracks where made right after Kurtis came back after a long absence, and they are far from his usual standard and the sound he have now. I would personally consider them an experiment of sound, he had just had a long break and was searching for a new sound. I think that he have found that sound now and the album "I sing the body electro" are a excellent album which reflects the Mantronik sound that i and most of us like and are used to hear from his work back in the days!!!! You can visit www.blackrhythm.com and buy the records if you like...if you have any questions about this case you can send me a mail - webmaster@cheebadesign.com

STEVE REICH REMIXED - Here's some more info on the remix album Mantronik appears on. It should give you a very good reason to buy it:

Various Artists Reich Remixed Nonesuch Records

Steve Reich has established himself as one of America's preeminent composers. Reich manufactured a style all his own, combining Western Classical music (perfected at Julliard) with drumming (gleaned while in Ghana in the '70s) and cantillation of Hebrew scriptures (learned in New York and Jerusalem).

The New York Times was prompted to write of him, "Few American composers have created a style so fiercely original, immediately recognizable and wholly accessible. It would be hard to think of any American music more important than this," yet it was not just the mainstream that was paying attention. In 1991, the Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" brought Reich to a whole new audience, Reich's "Electric Counterpoint" provides the track's base. It is here that Reich Remixed latches on.

Coldcut's remix of "Music for 18 Musicians" is a profound, ethereal meditation. Coldcut truly transcends the traditional divide between classical and modern dance music. The Ninja Tune man adds club-friendly beats and synth frills to Reich's already potent composition.

Howie B's remix of "Eight Lines" spices Reich's minimalism with a flurry of samples. Tranquility Bass' "Megamix" remix seems like it could go on forever with untainted fluidity, capitalizing on magnificent manipulation of Reich's 1966 piece "Come Out."

That track would be the album's best if it weren't for Mantronik's Maximum Drum Formula Remix of "Drumming." Not surprisingly, that Reich masterpiece from 1971 is fertile for DJ innovation. Reich's drumming remains pristine and visionary as Mantronik lashes at it with samples and loops aplenty.

The nine tracks on Reich Remixed are largely ingenious. Other remixes come from DJ Spooky, Ken Ishii and DJ Takemora, among others. An influence to so many (Aphex Twin, Tortoise and Labradford just to name a few), it is excellent to see Reich's work explicitly reworked as a tribute to his grandeur. Written by Eamon Joyce (A&E Editor).

Saturday March 20, 1999

MORE REMIX WORK - Once again Kurtis has used his incredible remix skills on a old track. This time he has remixed a track by the legendary Steve Reich. The track kurtis has done is "Drumming" from the album with the same name released in 1974. The same year as Kraftwerk released Autobahn, another one of Kurtis inspirational figures in music. Reich did alot of experiments with drum loops using a tape recorder back in the 60's - 70's, they didn't have drum machines back then you know :-) . I Only have a MP2 excerpt from the track for now, but i'll get the full version soon!!! Click here to Download (388KB)!!!

Monday October 19, 1998

JASON NEVINS DISSIN' KURTIS - Here's an interesting article i found on the net about a feud between Kurtis and Jason!!!

---Critics vs. Jason Nevins

New York old skool producer Kurtis Mantronik is fighting back after being slagged off by young upstart producer Jason Nevins, of Run DMC's It's Like That fame. Kurtis, speaking to Ministry magazine, pulled no punches. "I gotta doozy with him because he dissed me", said Kurtis before delivering his killer blow, "I've got a new tune with EPMD - it's a bit like Jason's, but it's got a feeling".

Run DMC also retaliated after tolerating several weeks of Nevin's very public putdowns. DMC told Mix Mag, referring to Nevins' remix ; "The hardcore fans need to understand that we had nuttin' to do with that, we're not making that type of music, so don't get pissed off at us, you know what I'm saying? I was sitting at home when it happened! Don't get mad at me! We don't want nobody to get confused and think we're gonna make our next album with Jason Nevins".

---if anyone knows more about this case, please e-mail me!!! it's nice with a litlle verbal fight isn't it :-)

Sunday October 18, 1998

NEW REMIXES - I just discovered that Kurtis Mantronik has done some remixing jobs for Disney. He has remixed a track by Jocelyn Brown called The Gospel Truth that appears in the animated movie Hercules. He has also remixed a cover version of David Bowie's China Girl that will appear on another Disney animated movie called Mulan!!!

NEW ARTICLE - I found a small article from dotmusic.com that say a little about Kurtis new album and the reason why he has been away from the music scene for so long. There's also mention of a new Mantronix album that will be more of a R&B / Pop style!!! Click here to go directly to the article!!!

NEW MP3 - I've made a new mp3 from the new album...it's my favourite track Original Electro...Click here to go directly to the audio section!! I have also replaced the real audio version of Original Electro with another track from the album called Cow Bites Man!!

Friday October 16, 1998

THE NEW ALBUM - Three of the songs from the new album "i sing the body electro" can be downloaded in the audio section. Click here to go directly to the audio site!! I've been informed that the UK release of the album is put back to January 1999!!! But don't worry, you can buy the cd at CD Cellar...Click here to go to their site!!! Thanks to Rich :-) ....One of the highlights of Mantronik's new album must be "Original Electro"....This is a perfect tribute to the inovators and godfathers of modern music "Kraftwerk". Using the beats from "numbers", the train sound & accord from "trans europe express", the bass from "home computer" & vocoded voices from "music non stop" & "numbers"...this is sinmply one of the best tracks i've heard in awhile...and bringing together two of my favourite musical wizards, just brings tears to my eyes....i must be dreaming :-) ...i also have to mention the track "push yer hands up" which heavily samples his own classic track "bassline"...all in all a great album you can't be without!!!

MANTRONIX LYRICS - If anyone would like to try and write down MC TEE's lyrics from their first 3 albums it would be highly appreciated. I would like to have the lyrics listed here, coz that's almost the only thing i lack here...so get your keyboards ready and pay attention to the lyrics :-) ...If you give me the lyrics for a full album (f.i. musio madness) you can pick a cd of your choice at Music Boulevard, and i will buy it, and send it to you!!!

Saturday October 3, 1998

SOUL TRAIN - I just received a video of Mantronix performing on Soul Train 1988. They play Simple Simon & Join me please...unfortunately in playback, and it looks pretty lame. But it's definitly a collectors item, since it's almost impossible to get anything by them on tape. It's also a small interview with Mantronik and Mc Tee after the performance...you can listen to it in my audio section. It's probably one of the last performances before MC Tee left the crew and it doesn't seem to me that there was any chemistry between them on stage. If you want this video you can contact Detrick - DLSStyle@aol.com - The quality of the tape (NTSC) is ok and the sound is pretty good. I paid 20 bucks for it (europe), but if you live in europe you must expect a long delivery time...it took almost 6 weeks before it ended up in my house!! It also features performances by : Pepsi & Shirley (ehhh), hindsight (hmm) and a cool coke comercial featuring Run Dmc :-)

BLADE SOUNDTRACK - It was brought to my attention that the Mantronik remix of EPMD's "Strictly Business" appears on the soundtrack for the movie Blade. It's a nice compilation also featuring : KRS One with the 80's electro band Channel One, gang starr, Mystikal, DJ Krush & a remix of New Order's old classic "Confusion" + other cool tracks!! MP3 TRACKS - Finally i got my hands on some Mantronix MP3's, thanks to my good friend Rich in the UK, Click here to go directly to the audio section and download some excellent stereo MP3's!!! I also have the equipment to make MP3's myself but it's very time consuming and i have dozens of other web sites to maintain, so i probably won't have the time to make many. But be patient and i will upload files whenever i can with some help from my mate Rich. I have also added some more information on the introduction section, i've re-written the intro and added some discography and producing facts. Click here to go directly to the introduction section.

BIRTHDAY!!! - Today our hero Kurtis Mantronik is 33 years old. bring out the champagne for the man...cheers :-)

THE NEW ALBUM - The new album is called "i sing the body electro", it was released September 1. Music Boulevard has the album on sale for $10.88!! Follow this link to make an order (just search for mantronik!).I'm still waiting for the album, but when i receive it i will put up some real audio files in the audio section.

MEGAMIX IN MP3 - I've just received an excellent mp3 version of the mix which is on the b-side of the 7" of scream. I have recently bought some more server space and will soon upload the mizx as a special feature for a short period of time. It will take some time to download (7 megs!), but it's worth it...believe me!!! I'll keep you posted!!!

FRENCH GIRLS - The new single will be released in 2 weeks. what i've heard about it is that it has a deep garage house mix on the b-side which is pretty good. He has also produced a track on Kult records for The Players Club called "tocuh me right"...haven't heard the track so i can't say anything about it yet!!

BASSLINE 2? - According to reports from Black Rhythm Records, Kurtis Mantronik wanted to make a second version of the old classics "Bassline" and "the king of the beats". Apparently the record company Capitol who owns the rights for those songs wouldn't sell them to Mantronik. Well isn't that the typical deal!!! Bastards!!! *Thanx to Marco Schraven for the info :-)

NEW SINGLES - There is apparently a new single out called "french girls"...i haven't heard this one but i'm expecting a real audio file of it very soon. You can buy the record at Black Rhythm Records!! - the same site also lists three other records as upcomming releases: let it go(has been released!), feel it & disco '98 which is a cd ep.

REAL AUDIO - I've made a better quality ra file of the new single Mad, check out the audio section.

SAMPLE LIST - I've started to make a list of Mantronix Samples that other people have in their music, i don't have many at this moment and would appreciate if you had any suggestions to the list. The list is in the Real Audio section.

NEW REMIX - A new remix has been released...it's the old hip hop classic "Strictly Business" by EPMD...the remix is in my opinion pretty cool and it's been made a video to go with it too!!! If you're lucky you can catch the video on MTV!! You can buy the single at Music Boulevard!!

NEW SINGLE - Mantronik (or Kurtis Mantronik as he calls himself now) are releasing a new single called "MAD". In my knowledge it will be release July 28, 1998. You can buy the single online at Music Boulevard!! I haven't yet heard the track but according to my UK mate "Rich" it's some kind of blend of Prodigy & Chemical Brothers...or at least something in that direction. This is good news when you think about the soft soul crap he put out some years ago (step to me!). Even if he don't make hip hop anymore, at least he's trying to go back underground with a more hardcore sound. We couldn't ask for more...I just hope he will countinue in that direction and make real phat tracks again!!!

NEW ALBUM - there will also be release a new album later this year...i will keep you informed when i know more!!

Stay tuned for more news related to Kurtis Mantronik / Mantronix
